Terra Linda High School has welcomed a new science teacher this year: Hank Shih, who teaches Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Physical Earth SDAIE. This year is his sixth year teaching.

Before coming to Terra Linda, Mr. Shih was born and raised in Taiwan. He moved to the United States when he was 18 and attended Diablo Valley College and UC Berkeley. Before joining the staff at Terra Linda, he taught at El Cerrito High School for five years.

Mr. Shih decided to become a teacher because after visiting classrooms and watching teachers work during college, he realized he wanted to make a difference in students’ lives. “I knew right then that I wanted to be in the classroom,” Mr. Shih said. Mr. Shih wanted to work at Terra Linda because of its supportive staff and students.

In Mr. Shih’s classroom, students can expect hands-on activities and science labs. “Science is best understood by doing,” Mr. Shih said. Additionally, he has aimed to create a relaxing and welcoming environment where students can feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.

Outside of school, Mr. Shih enjoys playing video games on Steam and eating raw fish and rare steak. An interesting fact about Mr. Shih is that he actually served in the Taiwanese army.

By the end of the year, Mr. Shih hopes his students learn how chemistry connects to everyday life and consider entering careers in science.
