Terra Linda High School’s spring theater production this year is Puffs, a show roughly inspired by Harry Potter. With it being organized and conducted almost entirely by seniors, it’s going to be a reflection of the Class of 2026. Directing, casting, costumes, and stage management are all being led by seniors in the Drama 4 Honors class. Most of these students in leadership positions have undergone four years of training and preparation in Terra Linda’s drama program to take on this enormous role.
Puffs is a comedic play that parodies the Harry Potter Series. It is from the perspective of the “puffs,” or the students in Hufflepuff, one of the four houses from the original series. It reimagines the original story, starring three kids who are not confident, smart, or heroic like their counterparts in J.K. Rowling’s books. It uses stand-in props, or objects used to act as people, and suggestive terms to avoid copyright, such as referring to Hogwarts as “A Certain School of Magic.” The story features themes of failure and friendship to build a positive, heartfelt message. “It’s really a story about underdogs stepping out of their role,” senior and co-director Allie Marovich said.
Placing students in leadership roles requires collaboration and trust among both students and staff in the drama department to ensure the play’s success. Seniors are not only responsible for organization and direction, but also for most of the creativity. Senior directors Leona Liskey and Marovich ran auditions and have been guiding the cast to shape the overall vision of the show. “Going into the rehearsals, we’ll be the ones fully directing it, giving direction, blocking scenes, and helping create the overall vision for the show,” shared Marovich. All students play vital roles in putting this production together. What makes it special is the importance of every cast and crew member.
Choosing the play Puffs was not an easy choice for the Drama 4 Honors students. “We read a variety of genres; comedies, dramas, mysteries, and even vignette-style plays, before we ultimately chose Puffs,” Marovich said. The group eventually chose Puffs because they felt it would make a fun and engaging show for the students and the audience. The show also has many roles, giving all interested students a chance to get involved. What makes “Puffs” special is that every student shows their personality through humor, emotions, and creativity, and they’re allowed to act like themselves while also enjoying the show.
Puffs is sure to be a successful end to the TL Drama 4 Honors seniors’ high school theater careers because it is fun and memorable, and it gives every actor and crew member a chance to shine. “No matter how big the role is, whether you’re a lead or in the ensemble, they’re all really important and really fun,” said Marovich. Because the play is based on a familiar story, the audience will feel more connected to the plot as well. Puffs will be a memorable play for the audience and all those involved in its production, especially the Drama 4 Honors seniors.
