With the 2026-27 Premier League season kicking off, teams are racing to get ahead with early points. Among the 20 clubs in the league, the current favorites are Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool. Arsenal—in addition to being one of the most hated clubs in the world of football—are the current reigning champions. In the 25-26 season, Arsenal won the title race with 85 points, 7 more than the runner up, Manchester City. This season, clubs went through extensive business and transfer changes to increase their chances of placing higher.
In West London, Chelsea spent a club record of 407 million Euros on player transfers this window. The transfer window is a global period where players are allowed to be bought and loaned to other teams. The average spending for a prem club during the transfer window is around 150 Euros. The club signed international defenders, Maxense Lacroix from France and Marco Palestra from Italy in an attempt to strengthen their back line. Lacroix joined Chelsea on the heels of an impressive performance at another Premier League club, Crystal Palace, while Palestra showed promise at Italian-side; Cagliari Calcio. Chelsea also recently signed English international Morgan Rogers in a 137 million Euro deal.
The club also bought goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and sold Enzo Fernandes, both of whom played for (and won with) Argentina in the 2026 World Cup. Along with the new players, Chelsea recently appointed former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso as head coach.
In North London, Tottenham Hotspur—who narrowly evaded relegation at the end of the last season—continues under coach Roberto De Zerbi. Tottenham, nicknamed “the ‘Spurs’,” spent over 350 million Euros on big transfers this season. They signed Newcastle star Sandro Tonali along with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Manchester City’s Sávio in an attempt to strengthen their midfield.
Finally, after his 4 year ban for doping, Mykhailo Mudryk will make his return to Premier League football as a Spur on loan from Chelsea. The Spurs successful transfer window is undoubtedly an attempt to avoid a repeat of last season’s near relegation.
Just 4 miles away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal—also known as the Gunners—at the Emirates Stadium look to defend their title as Premier League Champions. Mikel Arteta is the remaining head coach, coming up on his 7th year in that position at Arsenal. This transfer window, The Gunners made a few change-ups to their squad. Arsenal’s Belgian forward, Leandro Trossard, left the club for the Turkish Süper Lig. To replace him, the club signed Greek forward Christos Tzolis for 34.7 million Euros from the Belgian side, Club Brugge. Arsenal also signed the Brazilian Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle FC for 87.5 million Euros to strengthen their midfield. Gabriel Jesus, former Arsenal player, is now heading to Barcelona for 10 million Euros after Barcelona’s failure to acquire Julian Alvarez. Arsenal also says goodbye to Gabriel Martinelli as he departs to Al Hilal for 67 million Euros. Under Arteta, Arsenal’s squad is a promising favorite to win the league.
In Manchester, 13-time Premier League winners Manchester United continue under club legend Micheal Carrick. Carrick took the manager’s seat after the club recently sacked Ruben Amorim for his disappointing performance. Last season, Amorim won a disappointing 24 games out of 63, bringing about his departure. Carrick looks to lead United to a better result this season with his 4-4-2 central block tactics.
Manchester this season signed Midfielders Youri Tielmans and Andrey Santos. English International winger Marcus Rashford makes his return to Old Trafford after a successful bout in Barcelona. The club also signed Carlos Baleba from Brighton in what longtime United fan, Kieran Roder, describes as “Manchester United’s signing of the season.” Terra Linda Junior- Kieran says “Baleba will add depth and help organize United’s back line. We’re gonna win the league”. As the window gives many fans hope, United says goodbye to club legend Casemiro. United fans are hoping Carrick’s tactics can bring them better odds at winning a trophy.
Manchester City, United’s fierce rivals, spent 437 million Euros to completely reshape their squad for their new manager Enzo Maresca. Maresca was strangely sacked by Chelsea just 6 months after winning the Blues the Club world cup. After manager Pep Guardiola’s bittersweet departure from Manchester City, Maresca was given his second chance in the Premier League.
Along with Enzo Fernandes’s club record signing of 145 million Euros, Manchester City signed midfielders Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Iliman Ndiaye. Their new midfield (costing almost 380 million Euros total) arrived after losing Rodri to Barcelona, Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid, and Tijjani Reijnders to Al-Quadsiah.
Liverpool, the last of the big 6 teams, has seen a recent trend of disappointing results. After head coach Arne Slot won Liverpool an impressive first season League trophy, the team quickly declined in the 25-26 season. Slot managed only 17 wins out of 38 games, ultimately leading to his departure from the club. His replacement, Andoni Iraola, led AFC Bournemouth to a club record 6th place in the league. Along with Slot, also leaving Liverpool are Mo Salah to Trabzonspor, Andy Robertson to Tottenham, Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid, and Curtis Jones to Inter Milan. Because the club said goodbye to so many senior players, they were quick to sign new talent. 2-time UCL winner Bradley Barcola joins Liverpool for 125 million Euros. The club also signed Osusana forward Victor Muñoz for 40 million Euros and Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, the latter of whom is on loan from Liverpool.
Overall, we are looking forward to an exciting Premier league season with many teams working to get a shot at the title. This summer has no doubt been one of the most exciting transfer windows yet with multiple clubs shattering records. It’s safe to say this season’s going to have a competitive title race.
