Athlete of the Week: Rory Kearns

Ellie Gilbert

Sophomore Rory Kearns is in her second year playing water polo for Terra Linda’s Junior Varsity girls team. In the past week, the JV team played Redwood and Marin Catholic. Unfortunately, the Trojans lost to Marin Catholic but were able to secure the win against Redwood with an 8-2 final score! From those two games alone, Rory’s stats consist of four assists, four shots, and one  goal. Although this is only Rory’s second season playing water polo, she is a starter and her skills are improving rapidly. Her growth and development in her performance for the team is amazing given the short amount of time she has played with them.

While it may be her second season of water polo, Rory has been swimming for almost 10 years! What truly sparked her motivation to play water polo was her parents. Rory never took any special interest into the sport until she was given push from her parents and over time fell in love with it, and they became part of her reasoning to keep playing. ”My inspiration are the people that surround me, like my friend Jessa and my family,” she said. And she continues to push herself to be the best she can. “It’s a very difficult sport but it challenges me to be better and overtime I just grew that passion for it, and it really motivates me.” She ends that “even though it’s been a short time, water polo has become very important to me and it’s a part of who I am now.”
