The remains of the hot summer weather are slowly but surely dwindling, and people on campus have already begun to trade in their shorts and tank tops for layers and sweaters. Three TL fashionistas have offered insight into what fall wardrobe staples complete their outfits. From professional coats and tunics to more casual cardigans and leggings, they each have unique styles that shine in autumn.
As a graduate of San Francisco’s Academy of Art summer fashion program, junior Asher Abplanalp-Cowan has a distinct style that can best be described as elegant and classy. “I feel like fashion is the greatest, most efficient form of expression,” he reflected. As someone who had to wear a uniform throughout middle school, Abplanalp-Cowan is grateful to choose his outfits in high school and has taken advantage of this fashion freedom to the fullest. When describing his fashion sense, he states, “I like to dress up, not down.” This is shown through several of his style essentials in autumn, including trench coats and hats. To sum up his style advice, Abplanalp-Cowan quoted his fashion inspiration, Coco Chanel: “‘The best color in the world is the one that looks good on you.’”
Flaunting a more casual and simplified style of clothing, English teacher Lisa Crawford values comfort most in her outfits. Her closet essentials remain relatively similar throughout the year, and she enjoys clothes that are universal for each season. “You have to have, for me, a black sleeveless tunic and black opaque seamless leggings with a cardigan that can be taken off,” Crawford described, mentioning how the inconsistency of California weather makes it important to have layers in your wardrobe so you can remain comfortable in a variety of temperatures. Some people may say “beauty is pain,” but Crawford holds the opposite belief. She emphasized that feeling good in what you wear is the key to developing your style. “Be comfortable, live your life, and respect and enjoy your body,” she concluded.
The layers and dark colors of freshman Maya Hobstetter’s wardrobe complement the fall weather perfectly. Knit sweaters, cardigans, and Uggs are staples in her closet when the weather turns chilly. Hobstetter has had quite an evolution in her style over time, and she’s noticed it still changes as she tries new things. “Now I’m going into more of everything… so my fashion is different every single day,” she noted. Hobstetter typically relies on social media for new ideas, citing Pinterest and TikTok as examples of the apps she often turns to for fashion inspiration. Experimentation is important to forming her style. “Such as seeing how you feel in skirts or how you feel in pants or shorts. Seeing what you feel most comfortable in,” Hobstetter explained. She believes that the best way to find your style is to try out different types of clothing until you find what you like best.
This season, keep an eye out for these fashionable Trojans and take inspiration from their ability to express themselves through fashion. Whether you like to switch it up or stay consistent, dress fancy, or keep it simple, fall is the perfect time to show off your signature style.
