Sierra Burgess Is A Loser: Movie Review

Sierra+Burgess+Is+A+Loser%3A+Movie+Review

Sierra Burgess is a Loser was hyped after the release of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The cast includes Noah Centineo, who previously played Peter Kavinsky, the heartthrob on To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and the main character of Sierra Burgess, played by Shannon Purser, acts in Stranger Things and Riverdale. It also included RJ Cyler, who played in Power Rangers. There were also new faces, like Veronica, played by Kristine Froseth.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser  is a movie about a unconfident, unpopular girl. Another girl, Veronica, gives out Sierra’s phone number as a prank to a guy, Jamie. Jamie and Sierra start texting but Jamie thinks she is Veronica. Sierra then needs Veronica’s help to impersonate and catfish Jamie.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser was hyped after the release of To all the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and this in part due to the same actor playing the heartthrob (Noah Centineo). I will admit I became hyped over this too because of how much I enjoyed To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Many people were hyped and saw this as a let down. When I watched it for the first time I also felt like it was a let down and I could barely make it though. Now, watching it without expectations and the hype, I find it tolerable. The ending of the movie was a total flop because the whole story arch did not flow through so the twist did not work into the story. The football game ruined the whole movie and made it a flop. Rotten tomato critics rated it 66% but the audience rated it 34%, a major decrease.

I will say the acting was lacking and unconvincing. The movie had a lot of fluff, unnecessary side stories, and an uneven narrative. Dan, my favorite character by far, played as the voice of reason in the whole madness of the situation. Would I recommend you watch it? Yes, it’s okay and has some funny moments. However, this movie is not as great as other romantic movies like The Notebook and Pretty Woman. If you like the actors, need something entertaining to watch, and are not in it for the storyline, then you should definitely watch it.

Spoiler Alert time… Here are some scenes I liked. I loved all the scenes with Dan, as I said above he ended up being my favorite character. I hated the scene where Veronica and Jamie went on a date and Sierra and Jamie’s first kiss because it seemed stalky and not seamless. The whole football game became messy and made me dislike the whole movie. The football game just ruined the whole movie. I also felt like Veronica’s mom’s side story about the father seemed completely unnecessary. I became confused about the college side story with her counselor requesting Sierra to find something to go on her college application. I never saw the point of this or how this motivated the plot and moved it forward. The song, Sunflower, written by Sierra, was not my cup of tea. The song felt too literal and had too slow of a beat. The movie was fine, but it will not go down in history or be very prominent in entertainment. It’s entertaining, but not a big hit.

This movie promotes lying to your spouse and demonstrates a manipulative woman taking control of a man
