America’s Princess

On Monday, November 28th, the world revelled in the news that Prince Harry was finally engaged. American actress, Meghan Markle, most known for her role on Suits, an American television program on USA Network, is the lucky woman next to join the royal family. In the spring of 2018, the pair will exchange their vows and set out on an incredible adventure together as man and wife after dating for fifteen months. The Royal family already approves—even the corgis! “The corgis took to her straight away… I spent the last 33 years being barked at; this one walks in, absolutely nothing!” stated Prince Harry. When asked about the engagement, Prince Charles voiced, “I hope they’ll be very happy, indeed, is all I can say. It’s marvelous.” The Prince is not the only royal thrilled about this news. “The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness,” Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip tweeted their support.

The news has impacted others around the world—videos of reactions to the joyous news have exploded across the internet. “It’s bringing our two countries together,” stated a UK citizen on ABC News in reference to the engagement.

Many people are excited for the couple and are waiting for the wedding. However, with this engagement surfaced some racism about Meghan. Unfortunately, internet trolls are harassing Markle because of her skin tone calling her “exotic” and stating that “back in the olden days, she would have been the prince’s mistress or companion.” Fortunately, many defended her against these hateful statements, as did Prince Harry through his spokesperson. “Some of this has been very public… the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff, the deputy editor of Gal-dem Magazine—who is black—stated, “Britain is not, in the grand scheme of things, a multicultural country, especially compared to the States; we’re very much a minority here and there is a lot of prejudice against black people.” However many around the world and the majority of the internet stand up for Markle and wish years of wedded bliss for the happy, handsome couple. “This beautiful woman just literally tripped and fell into my life,” stated Prince Harry.
