Terra Linda’s own student rapper Demato (Ben Gideon) just dropped his newest and fifth track, “Who’s Real ft. Angelique.” Demato dropped his first fireball about three months ago, but began rapping about a year and a half ago.

He began rapping because “[he] had so many things to say and no other means of expression.” He states that “while most [artists] rap about imperfections of the ghetto or the harsh world, I show the flaws throughout a world that is seemingly perfect.” His raps are motivated by change. He wants to bring awareness to the immoral actions of our society, such as “being spoiled and getting everything they want and complaining when there’s nothing to complain about and wanting more when there’s nothing more they could have.”

Demato never shies away from exposing frauds or telling the truth about what he sees. In his song “Royal,” he comments on the privileged nature of teenagers in the Bay Area, and the ridiculous lifestyle they live here. His lyrics state, “Whippen in the Audi, if they crash they get another.” Demato’s lyrics show he does not fear confronting controversial topics like affluenza and racism.

His song, “Who’s Real,” is about forging one’s own path and not changing oneself by lying about who one really is. The inspiration for the song is Demato’s experience with snakes, fakes, and backstabbers, and he’s had enough. He says, “If I can do anything to reduce the number of fakes, I’m down.” His lyrics say that  “Bi***es like piranhas, want their Starbucks and their ganja.”  If you want to be “enlightened” on other social issues, go to soundcloud.com/demato to support your local rapper.
