With the rise of social media trends, Valentine’s Day has evolved into a day to not only celebrate romantic relationships but also platonic ones. Despite the historically romantic connotation of the holiday filled with heart-shaped chocolate boxes and teddy bears, many now celebrate this day with their friends as a chance to enjoy the company of loved ones and cherish the bonds they’ve built.
TL students have reflected on the essence of Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love, and looked past highly commercialized aspects that entice people to make purchases that lack genuine thought and care in selection. In turn, focusing on the aspect of quality time, they’ve taken to making the twist of having fun with friends on this special occasion rather than focusing on the loneliness that may stem from a romance-filled holiday. TL Junior Allie Marovich shares, “I think it’s important because it gives [you] a day where you can show your friends how thankful you are for their friendship.” She goes on to emphasize the importance of focusing on the bright side especially when some may have negative associations with the holiday.
TL senior Alexa Corsiglia explains the importance of celebrating Palentine’s stating, “It’s getting together with your friends because you care about and love them” Often drawing inspiration from social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and even Pinterest, many TL students have taken to planning fun activities and crafts, with a side of snacks and food. Crafts vary from candle and ceramic painting to jewelry making and even bedazzling. Brunches, baking, and other fun food projects often accompany this. So, as this year’s holiday approaches, grab your friends, wear your florals, and draw inspiration from classmates around you.
Friends are redefining this holiday one celebration at a time. Corsiglia said it best stating, “I think friends love you just as much as a partner, so I think it’s important to celebrate everybody you love.” Don’t hesitate or forget to acknowledge the friendships that you rely on and raise a toast to Palentine’s Day!
