Varsity athlete Kayla Ferraro has continued to show her excellence over her fourth year of Terra Linda basketball. This is Ferraro’s second year in a row being named Athlete of the Season, which shows her tremendous athleticism and consistency over the years. Ferraro’s performance has only grown in terms of skill, leadership, and every other aspect of her playing.
Ferraro began her basketball career young, playing since the third grade on club and school teams. Beginning high school she started on the freshman team but was pulled up that season for the North Coast Section (NCS) playoffs, and remained on the Varsity team since then. Over her first official season on Varsity as a sophomore, she quickly climbed through the ranks and became a starter. And these past two seasons, was named for honorable mention by Marin County All League.
On the court, Ferraro’s main position is point guard, but she is malleable to any position she’s needed to play. She excels in commanding the offense and consistently calling plays. Additionally, in nearly every game this season, Ferraro was the top scorer for her team, averaging 12 points per game. Ferraro had standout moments this year, scoring 23 points against San Rafael High School and 17 against Novato High School, leading her team to both MCAL wins after coming up short to those teams in the prior season. “These were really big games, especially against SR. I knew our team wanted that win, and I wanted that win; I’m really grateful I was able to step up scoring wise.” Ferraro adds. During a tournament in Newark, Ferraro was also named as her team’s All Tournament player, averaging 15 points over that weekend. If you’re watching the game, you will rarely see Ferraro on the sideline as she’s always involved on the court, reflecting her attitude and impact on the team. “I just push myself, I’m determined to play my best no matter what, and I always want to be a better athlete.” Ferraro states.
Outside of her skill, Ferraro is a tremendous leader as a co-captain alongside seniors Sammi Reno and Natalie Jaworski, and always strives to be there for her teammates. Ferraro comments, “I like reassuring everyone about why we’re hereI encourage my teammates no matter the situation to keep going, and, even if they’re having a bad day, to be confident.” Basketball has been a tremendously important part of Ferraro’s life, and she aims to instill that same sense of importance into everyone she shares the court with. Jaworski shares, “Kayla is a great example of what a captain should be. Her love for basketball has really pushed everybody to work really hard. She always helps everyone be the best they can be.”
After four years of tremendous contribution to TL basketball, it is safe to say the program would not be where they are without her. In the future, Ferraro hopes to play basketball for a club team at a California college. While this season marks the end of her TL basketball career, it’s only expected that Ferraro will go above and beyond after graduation.
