New Teachers at TL: Lanie King
November 8, 2016
Lanie King teaches U.S History and Government part-time here at Terra Linda. This is her 8th year teaching, but first year teaching at TL after a 9 year break to raise her daughter. This year is also the first year she’s not teaching freshman classes. Social Studies is King’s subject area of choice because of her belief that it encompasses every subject and that history helps students better understand other subjects. King decided to become a teacher after graduating from university. She got her master’s in teaching and undergrad in history and religion. King chose to teach at TL because she lives here and is a TL alumni. Her mom, Mrs.Shapiro, also works here. Working in the area she lives allows her to make a real difference in the community.
Compared to other schools she has taught at, TL is in a more suburban area with less kids. There’s also more outreach to students. Link Crew’s work with freshman stood out to her.
She teaches part-time to have time to take care of her kids: her daughter who is 9 and her son who is almost 6.
King is learning about new developments in teaching technology she missed during her hiatus. She uses an app in class to help her grade tests. She tries to be a realist with her students especially with how much homework she assigns. She tries to do more in-class work than homework.
Her goals for the year is to get back into the swing of teaching and become a part of the TL community. She wants her students to understand and add to their relationship to the community.
